Soon to be ready!
I had a wonderful weekend brimming with paper dolls. Saturday I got the chance to sketch and ink several new dolls and dresses (including the collaboration project Rachel, Boots and I are working on). The Little Women dolls, which have been promised for so long, are finally in the works. Jo and Meg are completed and Beth and May are sketched. The remaining work is make a list of all their costumes from the book and then begin drawing them.
Speaking of the process, Rachel had mentioned that she was curious about how I take a book and bring it into a paper doll format. For those of you who are also curious, keep reading!
The process generally begins as I am reading a book and I realize that the costumes I imagine in my head would look really neat on paper. Once I have a book chosen to depict as a paper doll, I re-read it, marking every page that has a costume described. I also try to catch any scenes where a different outfit is needed but not mentioned in the text.
That is the most tedious part, the rest is the fun part. If it is a historical book I do research. I search google and pinterest for dresses of the era (museums and fashion plates are my best friends at this point). Once I have a good idea of the current styles of that particular year (yes, I go by year not just era), I begin to draw.
The book comes into play quite a bit when deciding how to position the doll. I use information of her physical characteristics as well as her personality to choose how to depict her. Once the doll is drawn (with era appropriate undergarments) I get to bring to paper the dresses and outfits for all the occasions in the story. I try to be as accurate as possible where details are mentioned in the book. If no clothing description is present, I get to draw whatever I want!
